Skiing: Vermont > Jay Peak

Aficionados of tree and glade skiing and riding do enjoy Jay's acres of groomed trails - it makes it easier to zip to their favorite glades. Thanks to reliable natural snowfall, high altitude, and a location in far northern Vermont, Jay's glades open early and stay open late, much to the delight of bark eaters from all over the east.

Those who prefer their snow groomed need not worry; Jay has miles of well-groomed trails for all abilities, most of it covered by snowmaking. Scenic cruisers like Vermonter and Northway off the summit vie for your attention with steeper groomed trails like Haynes and The Jet over on Stateside (Jay regulars refer to the two interconnected halves of the mountain as Tramside and Stateside). Those new to skiing and riding also have an excellent choice of lower-angle groomers, and even an easier glade, Bushwacker, in which to sample Jay's signature woods.

A lot of mountains in the east offer glades. Jay specializes in them.

Jay Peak has the best terrain in the entire North East. The glades are simply amazing. Skiing in the woods is encouraged. This is a must visit for hardcore skiiers.

Jay's tree and glade possibilities range from relatively open areas - Stateside Glade and Timbuktu come to mind - to tight tree shots like Kitz Woods and Valhalla. Steep chutes lead into Everglade and Staircase, while Vertigo, just off Upper River Quai, is both steep and tight. Up above you'll find The Face and a number of very steep chutes off the summit ridge, open when the snow allows. But beware! Jay doesn't rate any of its terrain above a black diamond, but there are more than a handful of marked trails and glades that require all your attention and skill.

Eight lifts provide access to all this, whether it's mild or wild you're after. The Jet Triple on Stateside serves a pod of mostly black diamond trails and glades, the Bonaventure Quad drops you on the ridge that separates the two halves of the mountain, and the 60-passenger tram or the Green Mountain Flyer provide a ride to the good stuff over on Tramside. Four other lifts get you up and around the easier terrain.

For those who want to play in the park, Jay offers up a half pipe and a large and varied terrain park at Stateside.
